Taste test triumphs: ranking this week’s Crumbl Cookie creations

By Ketsia Tshienda Oct 26, 2024 | 6:00 PM

Cookie Crumble Lineup for the week of October 21 to October 26, 2024.

Crumbl Cookies has captivated dessert lovers since 2017, starting with a mission to perfect the chocolate chip cookie. Founded by cousins Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley in Logan, Utah, Crumbl has rapidly expanded to over 1,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada, including three in Calgary: Westhill, Deerfoot Meadows, and Quarry Park.

The Crumbl experience

Crumbl’s rotating weekly menu features six cookie flavours that change every Sunday. This strategy encourages repeat visits and creates urgency. The cookies are beautifully packaged in iconic pink boxes, making them perfect for sharing on social media. Their unique design is perfect for sharing on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where visuals reign supreme. In this review, we’ll dive into the latest offerings from Crumbl and see if they live up to the hype.

This week’s flavour lineup

This week, Crumbl introduced six intriguing flavours: Milk Chocolate Chip, Banana Upside Down Cake, Pink Velvet Cookie Cake, Confetti Milkshake, Kentucky Butter Cake, and Sticky Bun. My rating is based on the cookie texture, the flavour of the cookie, and the pairing of the toppings and cookie itself.

1. Milk Chocolate Chip

The Milk Chocolate Chip cookie is considered a cookie classic in many homes across America and is no different at Crumbl. Crumbl’s version features generous chocolate chunks that melt in your mouth. A fan favourite rated 4.5/5 on Crumbl’s website, I give it  a 4.0/5 for being slightly less exciting compared to others this week.

2. Banana Upside Down Cake

Next up was the Banana Upside Down Cake, which was quite surprising to me as I was expecting Crumbl Cookie to sell just that, cookies. Crumbl described this dessert as a warm banana cake with toffee glaze and vanilla bean whipped cream. Despite a 99-cent upcharge and missing glaze at 14:00 on a Monday, the flavour impressed me. As disappointed as I was, the flavour of the cake blew me away. A buttery banana bread paired with the vanilla bean whipped cream was a pleasant burst of flavour making up for the lack of toffee glaze. Rated 4.07/5 online, I rate it 4.9/5.

3. Pink Velvet Cookie Cake

Crumbl’s Sugar Cookie is a classic that never disappoints. Oh wait, this review is for the Pink Velvet Cookie Cake…I tasted no difference. What was supposed to be a cake batter cookie topped with a layer of vanilla cream was a disappointing dry sugar cookie with an unpleasant tasting icing. I had high hopes that this cookie would taste like a red velvet cookie with whipped cream cheese frosting and unfortunately Crumbl did not deliver. Unfortunately this cookie was so overwhelmingly sweet, that I could not go in for a second bite. Rated 4.43/5; I give it a 3.0/5 for its presentation.

4. Confetti Milkshake

Crumbl’s Confetti Milkshake is a chilled cookie rolled in sprinkles with cake-flavoured buttercream and whipped cream. This cookie is quite different to the others as it is a chilled cookie, which is not my personal favourite. Bias aside, the flavours of the cookie are not bad at all. The sprinkles provide a nice crunch but the combination of buttercream and whipped cream is overkill. The combination of the two takes away from each other.  Rated 4.36/5; my rating is 3.9/5.

5. Kentucky Butter Cake

Kentucky Butter Cake is a yellow butter cookie cake covered with a buttery glaze. Not knowing what to expect from a yellow butter cookie I was pleasantly surprised. My only complaint would have to be the clumpy texture of the glaze. Rated 4.44/5 online; I rate it 4.7/5. This cookie shows that sometimes simplicity is key.

6. Sticky Bun

Finally, we have the Sticky Bun, which was quite disappointing appearance-wise. Sticky Bun is advertised as a buttery cookie stuffed with cinnamon sugar filling, then topped with butterscotch caramel and a crunch of pecan streusel. I was met with a spiced cookie which paired quite well with the little amount of caramel I was given. This cookie lacked the expected butterscotch caramel topping and pecan streusel. The lack of butterscotch does not come as a shock as my banana cake was missing its toffee glaze. While the spiced cookie was enjoyable, it fell short visually and texturally. Rated 3.89/5 online; I give it a 3.5/5.

Final thoughts

Crumbl Cookies impresses with its adventurous flavours and appealing designs, though not every cookie meets expectations—like the Pink Velvet Cookie Cake versus the standout Kentucky Butter Cake. For those looking to indulge in these sweet treats, Crumbl remains a fun experience filled with surprises each week. As you embark on your own Crumbl adventure, remember that moderation is key; these cookies are rich and high in calories! Enjoy them as an occasional treat rather than an everyday indulgence to fully appreciate their unique flavours without going overboard. Happy tasting!
