University students these days seem to be in tune with their mental health. We understand more than ever how important it is to feel good in your own skin. One of the ways I have been able to stay happy in the stressful times of university is with a technique called forest bathing.
What is forest bathing?
Forest bathing, in simple terms, is the idea of going outside and breathing in the fresh air. The term was first used in Japan In the 1980s as a mental and physical exercise called shinrin-yoku (“forest bathing” or “taking in the forest atmosphere”). It has only become more useful in today’s atmosphere. We go to school and spend five to 10 hours a day on our laptops only to take a break by going on our phones. Spending most of your time staring at screens throughout the day can make it hard to focus, and leads to stress, anxiety, and even depression.
How do I start?
Here in Calgary, we are blessed to be so close to the mountains. Hiking in areas like Kananaskis and Banff are always a good time, but you don’t even need to leave the city. Calgary has places like Fish Creek and Prince’s Island park, that allow you to spend time in nature without even leaving the city. So if you’re feeling stressed, anxious or depressed, maybe try spending some time outside in one of Alberta’s many national and provincial parks. Spend some time just enjoying nature and breathing in the fresh air.
Starting to feel better.
Next time you think of taking a break from your studies, maybe think about spending some time outside. Even a short time spent outside can be very beneficial, the most important part is being present in where you are! We live on a beautiful planet with so much to offer, we have to be apart of it and get away from the concrete jungles we call home.
