The look back
Two years removed from their U Sports National Championship, the MRU Cougars women’s hockey team hits the ice at home for the first time this regular season to face the Trinity Western University Spartans. After a third place finish in the Canada West standings and falling to the University of Alberta Pandas in the Canada West Semifinal, the Cougars look for more this season. With the departures of Emma Bergesen, Breanne Trotter, Mackenzie Loupelle, and Tianna Yaremko, the door is open and the time is now for some newcomers to make an impression.
The look ahead
While Scott Rivett returns for his 16th season behind the Cougars’ bench, his daughter Jordyn comes in looking to start the season on the right paw alongside fellow forwards Lyvia Butz, and Dara Thompson, and defenders Breanne Comte, Ava Farid-Malthe, and Brielle Minish. Last year’s Cougar’s points and assists leader, Aliya Jomha, also makes her return to the team alongside Canada West All-Rookie Team member Jerzey Watteyne who has a sky-high potential this season. Finally, Kaitlyn Ross makes her return to the crease as the Cougar’s starting goaltender this season. After sporting a .934 save percentage and a goals-against average of 1.69, Ross looks to shake off the career–high one penalty she took last season.
Show your Cougar pride
As good as the team on the ice is, it’s always better to play with fans in the stands. Show your cougar pride by showing up in your Cougars apparel:
- Hats/Toques
- T Shirts
- Hoodies
- Crew necks
Puck drop is at 7:00pm tonight and 5:00pm tomorrow! Tickets are $15 for Adults, $10 for Seniors, $5 for ages 17 and under, and MRU students get in free! Mark your calendars and check out both the women’s schedule and the men’s schedule. Cheer loud, cheer proud, and let’s go Cougars!
