I’m sure everyone remembers online learning. Waking up 5 minutes before class just to roll out of bed and log into your designated online classroom. Cozy in pajamas, possibly even eating breakfast while tuning into the lecture. This situation might sound really good in theory, but there might be some serious benefits to in person learning as well. In the rest of this blog I am going to give you my opinions, and duel it out between online and face to face learning to see who wins this battle of the classrooms!
Interacting with people face-to-face
Some online classes require you to have your camera on, still, it just doesn’t quite compare to the experience of physically interacting with fellow students. Face to face learning makes it much easier to connect with fellow students and the instructor. In my online classrooms I was often too shy to speak up, and I’m sure lots of others felt the same. Also, being physically on campus may lead to fun activities with the people around you. Mount Royal offers many exciting opportunities such as: relaxing with friends at West Gate Social, making it to the top of the rock climbing wall, as well as many fun clubs you can join to really become part of the mount royal experience!
Focusing better in class
Let’s face it, it’s all too easy to not even bother getting out of bed for those early morning lectures. Being in the comfort of your own home can make it very hard to stay focused as there are distractions everywhere. Like how am I supposed to stay focused when I have a dog? My dog Vinny is often a distraction for me, he is a Cane Corso and 130 pounds of adorableness (not exactly an easy dog to ignore!) But, on the flip side, when I put myself into a learning environment and remove some distractions, I think it becomes much easier to stay focused.
Positives of online learning
Face to face learning might seem like the winner so far, but I think it’s only fair to give online learning a fighting chance. The convenience of not having to commute to class can be very nice, especially if you live far away (not to mention the money you save on gas.) Also, the fact that online lectures can be recorded, makes it easy to go back and review certain topics if you forget something. And lastly in case of a pandemic, online learning helps students and professors feel safe while still allowing classes to continue.
Winner of the battle
While online learning may have some positives, unless there is another pandemic going on, I think that Face to Face learning is better than online learning. With face to face learning you can connect with fellow students and stay focused in class, which in my opinion is better than a little convince that online learning offers!
