Gorillaz, a virtual band formed by Blur lead singer Damon Albarn and illustrator Jamie Hewlett, is lining up for their release of their 8th studio album in late february; Cracker Island. The upcoming album (In my opinion) is on track to be one of their best, as each of the three singles released have been some of my favorite songs of the year!
The band currently has 6 major albums:
- Gorillaz, released in 2001
- Demon Days, released in 2005
- Plastic Beach, released in 2010
- Humanz, released in 2017
- The Now Now, released in 2018
- Song Machine: Season One, released in 2020
In order to celebrate this success, here are all the top 5 Gorillaz albums ranked by me: a self-acclaimed Gorillaz Superfan:
-
Gorillaz Self-Titled
Favorite Song: Clint Eastwood
I would like to start this off by saying,I don’t think that Gorillaz have a bad album. These records are quite enjoyable, even when they’re at their weakest. In this case, one of the weakest is their self titled album, Gorillaz. This album is actually quite experimental, especially for 2001 alt-rock. Although an enjoyable listening experience, a lot of the songs on this album are too abstract for my taste, and some of the harsh and outdated production definitely doesn’t help with the weaker songs. Score: 7.75/10

The Now Now
Favorite Song: Tranz
The Now Now is the Gorillaz most happy album to date. The album was designed to sound upbeat, which sets it aside from many of their other works in terms of tone. This a groovy, but not electrifying collection of songs, which adds even more to the uniqueness of the album. Although one of my personal favorites, I do feel that this album lacks the grip on creative story-telling that the other albums have, which takes it down a notch for me. Score: 8/10
-
Plastic Beach
Favorite song: Rhinestone Eyes
This take is contreversial, considering how critically acclaimed this album is, and how beloved it is by fans. This album is by no means bad however, and it really is one of their best. Plastic Beach takes funky and exhilarating sounds, fresh and unique features, and mixes it up with an anti-consumerism stance that results in a fun and electric sonic experience. However, some songs on this record did not stand up to multiple listens, which is why its ranked lower than most people would say. Score: 9/10
-
Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
Favorite song: Valley of the Pagans
I really don’t have much to say about this album. Its experimental, tropical and dreamy, with every song introducing an innovative sound that really shows you how much the music has changed and improved upon its mistakes. This album is just an amazing listen and I highly recommend you check it out. Score: 9.25/10
-
Demon Days
Favorite song: Kids with Guns
Born in the shadow of the Iraq war, Demon Days is a gritty, grueling and nihilistic album, speaking out against social and political issues in an engaging alt-rock setting. From the addictive baselines to the overblown electric guitar, this album has sounds and songs for everyone. This album is the peak of Gorillaz’s discography, and perfectly encapsulates the sophomore slump that the band has had. Score: 10/10
